Georgia’s Wind and Solar Generation Rises 61.6% in First Seven Months of 2026

Combined wind and solar generation increased sharply in January–July 2026, supported by new capacity, although the two technologies still represent a small share of Georgia’s electricity supply.

Wind and solar generation in Georgia increased by 61.6% year-on-year in the first seven months of 2026, according to Galt & Taggart’s latest Electricity Market Watch.

The increase came as new renewable-energy capacity entered operation during the year.

In July alone, wind and solar generation more than doubled compared with the same month of 2025.

New capacity begins to lift output

Galt & Taggart attributes the growth to the commissioning of new power plants, including 10.8 MW of solar capacity and 18.8 MW of wind capacity.

The contribution of wind and solar to total electricity supply rose from 0.4% in July 2025 to 0.9% in July 2026.

This means the rapid percentage growth is still coming from a relatively small base.

Hydropower remained dominant in July, accounting for 98.1% of total electricity supply.

Seasonal imbalance remains a challenge

The report also highlights Georgia’s continuing seasonal mismatch between electricity supply and demand.

During the first months of 2026, the country relied more heavily on imports and thermal generation. Later in the year, favorable hydrological conditions created excess supply.

Generation curtailments occurred in May, June and July as supply exceeded domestic demand and available export opportunities.

Galt & Taggart estimates that around 5% of potential generation was curtailed in July.

The research company estimates that curtailment could have reached 10–15% without ESCO’s electricity barter arrangement with Turkey.

More renewable generation will require greater flexibility

The first seven months of 2026 therefore show two developments taking place at the same time.

Wind and solar generation is growing quickly, while Georgia’s electricity system continues to face a strong seasonal imbalance.

Galt & Taggart says this increases the importance of reservoir hydropower, wind generation, energy storage and additional export infrastructure.

These technologies and infrastructure can help the system manage periods of both surplus and shortage as Georgia adds more renewable generation.

For wind and solar, the latest figures show that their role in Georgia’s electricity mix is beginning to grow. Their overall contribution remains limited, but new capacity is now becoming visible in national generation data.
