Edisher Mamaladze: How Sakcable Developed a Georgian-Made Solar Cable

Sakcable’s supervisory board chair explains how the company developed and certified a locally manufactured solar cable, and why local supply matters for Georgia’s growing photovoltaic market.

Georgia’s solar market depends not only on panels and inverters, but also on less visible components that must operate outdoors for decades.

As demand for photovoltaic equipment increased, Sakcable decided to develop a solar cable in Georgia rather than continue relying entirely on imported products.

renewables.GE spoke with Edisher Mamaladze, Chairman of Sakcable’s Supervisory Board, about the product’s development, its seven-month TÜV NORD testing process, international certification, and its use in Georgia and Armenia. Sakcable’s official information confirms that the product is manufactured in line with EN 50618:2014 and IEC 62930:2017 and holds certifications from TÜV NORD and the Czech Electrotechnical Testing Institute.

Developing a local solar product

renewables.GE: Sakcable has produced many types of cable for decades. How did the idea of developing a special solar cable begin?

Edisher Mamaladze: As the renewable energy sector started growing in Georgia, we noticed increasing demand for high-quality solar cables. Until then, these products were entirely imported.

We saw an opportunity to use our decades of experience in cable manufacturing and develop the first solar cable made in Georgia—one that meets international standards, can compete with leading international brands, and supports the country’s transition to renewable energy.

renewables.GE: In simple terms, what makes a solar cable different from an ordinary electrical cable?

Edisher Mamaladze: A solar cable is designed specifically for photovoltaic systems and operates in much more demanding conditions than a standard electrical cable.

Its conductor is made of tinned copper wire, which provides long-term protection against oxidation and corrosion. It is continuously exposed to ultraviolet radiation, extreme temperature changes, moisture and other environmental factors.

Our solar cables are halogen-free and flame-retardant. They are designed for different climate conditions, with a minimum service life of 25 years and an operating temperature range of 90–120°C.

We also use premium Italian insulation material containing a US-made rodent-resistant additive, which provides additional protection throughout the cable’s service life.

renewables.GE: What did Sakcable need to change or develop before it could produce the solar cable in Georgia?

Edisher Mamaladze: Producing solar cables required much more than adding another product to our portfolio.

We selected specialised raw materials, adapted our production processes and carried out extensive testing. From the beginning, our goal was to develop a product that fully complied with international quality and safety standards.

Seven months of testing and certification

renewables.GE: The certification process lasted around seven months. What happened during that process?

Edisher Mamaladze: The certification involved several stages.

We submitted product samples to the TÜV NORD laboratory, where they underwent approximately seven months of testing for compliance with EN 50618:2014 and IEC 62930:2017.

The tests assessed UV resistance, mechanical strength, electrical performance, the composition of the insulation and sheath, temperature resistance, long-term environmental durability and other critical parameters.

At the same time, TÜV NORD experts from Europe carried out a detailed audit of our manufacturing facility, machinery, raw materials and production process.

After the laboratory testing and factory audit were completed successfully, Sakcable received the TÜV NORD certificate, confirming compliance with internationally recognised standards.

renewables.GE: What did the TÜV NORD certification change for Sakcable and for customer confidence in the product?

Edisher Mamaladze: In our industry, simply claiming that a product is high quality is not enough.

TÜV NORD certification gave customers independent confirmation that the product meets internationally recognised quality and safety standards.

Our solar cable also holds a Certificate of Conformity from the Czech Electrotechnical Testing Institute, known as EZÚ, as well as CPR certification confirming compliance with the harmonised requirements of the European Union’s Construction Products Regulation.

These certifications strengthen customer confidence and improve our competitiveness in international markets.

Sakcable’s official certification announcement similarly states that the process combined laboratory testing with a detailed review of the company’s production facility, machinery and materials.

From Georgia to regional markets

renewables.GE: Where is Sakcable’s solar cable already being used, and what feedback have you received from solar companies and installers?

Edisher Mamaladze: Today, Sakcable solar cables are used in a number of major solar-energy projects across Georgia, and they are also being used in Armenia.

The feedback has been very positive. Customers value that a locally manufactured product carries internationally recognised certifications, delivers high quality, and comes with a more flexible and responsive supply partner.

renewables.GE: Sakcable already exports products to Europe and other regions. Has the solar cable also reached foreign markets, or is that the next step?

Edisher Mamaladze: Export expansion is an important part of our strategy.

The product has already entered the Armenian market, and our internationally recognised certifications—including EZÚ and TÜV NORD—create strong opportunities for further exports.

They demonstrate that the product meets demanding international requirements and make entry into new markets easier.

renewables.GE: How important is local manufacturing for Georgia’s growing solar sector?

Edisher Mamaladze: It is becoming increasingly important.

When a strategic product like this is manufactured locally, solar projects benefit from a more reliable supply chain, faster service and stronger technical support.

As Georgia continues investing in renewable energy, domestic manufacturers capable of producing internationally certified products strengthen both the country’s energy sector and its economy.
