Hydropower to Supply More Than 80% of Georgia’s Forecast 2026 Electricity Output

Georgia expects hydropower to provide more than 80% of its electricity generation in 2026, underlining the sector’s continued importance to the national energy system.

Georgia expects to generate approximately 14.5 TWh of electricity in 2026, with hydropower accounting for more than four-fifths of forecast domestic production.

The 2026 electricity balance, approved by an order of the Ministry of Economy and Sustainable Development dated 8 January, sets out projected generation, consumption, imports and exports for the calendar year.

Hydropower plants are forecast to produce 11.7 TWh, or about 81% of planned domestic generation. Thermal power plants are expected to contribute 2.7 TWh.

The contribution from non-hydro renewables remains small. Wind generation is projected at 84 GWh, while solar plants are expected to produce 20.3 GWh. Together, wind and solar would account for roughly 0.7% of forecast domestic output.

Total consumption is projected at 15.6 TWh. The balance includes 1.9 TWh of imports and 875 GWh of exports, showing that cross-border trade is expected to remain important despite Georgia’s large hydropower base.

The figures are planning estimates rather than guaranteed production levels. Actual generation will depend on hydrological conditions, plant availability, demand and electricity trade during the year.

Even with that qualification, the balance provides a clear starting point for the 2026 market: hydropower remains dominant, imports are still required, and solar and wind have yet to become material contributors to national supply.
