Georgian renewable-energy company Step Energy says it is developing solar projects with a combined planned capacity of 75 MW as it expands into larger EPC contracts, battery storage and agrivoltaics.
The company disclosed the figures in a recent interview with Entrepreneur Georgia, which Step Energy subsequently shared through its official LinkedIn page.
Founded in 2020, Step Energy began with smaller projects before moving into commercial and utility-scale solar development.
According to co-founder Beka Tsetsadze, the company was established during the COVID-19 pandemic by three partners with backgrounds in photovoltaic engineering, regional sales and hydropower investment.
“We understood the energy market, looked ahead and saw the benefits that solar energy could bring to Georgia,” Tsetsadze said in the interview.
Portfolio moves towards larger projects
Step Energy provides engineering, procurement and construction services for solar projects.
The company can manage the full EPC cycle, including design, equipment sourcing, construction and commissioning. It also provides individual services where clients require only engineering, procurement or construction support.
Step Energy said its portfolio includes completed solar plants with capacities of 3.5 MW, 5 MW and 7 MW.
A 14 MW project is currently in progress, while the company also reported work on smaller 2 MW and 2.5 MW installations.
In parallel, Step Energy said it had completed technical studies and design work for several projects ranging from 2 MW to 250 MW. These projects are expected to move towards construction at different stages.
The company is also developing projects with a combined capacity of 75 MW. Discussions with potential investors are taking place through Georgia’s Ministry of Economy and Sustainable Development, according to the interview.
Step Energy expects to remain involved in these developments through the full EPC package.
New equipment and construction capacity
The company is investing in its own technical capacity as project sizes increase.
Step Energy has imported specialised machinery from China for land preparation and the installation of solar mounting structures.
The company said its office, engineering, project-management and field teams now include close to 100 people, with further growth planned.
According to Tsetsadze, keeping engineering and construction capabilities inside the company allows Step Energy to manage the full delivery process and maintain greater control over project quality.
Storage and agrivoltaics become new priorities
Battery energy storage is becoming another important area for Step Energy.
The company said it has already completed several commercial projects using storage systems, including what it described as one of the largest off-grid projects in the region.
No detailed capacity figures for these storage installations were included in the Entrepreneur Georgia article.
Step Energy also plans to develop agrivoltaic projects in Georgia.
Agrivoltaics combines electricity generation and agricultural production on the same land. Solar panels are installed above or alongside crops, allowing the site to continue serving both energy and agricultural purposes.
The model is already used in several European markets, but remains at an early stage in Georgia.
Regional expansion
Step Energy is active in Armenia and plans to strengthen its work in neighbouring markets.
The company also said it is studying opportunities in Ukraine, with the longer-term objective of contributing to energy reconstruction and renewable-energy development after the war.
Step Energy works with international equipment manufacturers including Sungrow and Jinko Solar. According to the company, it is an official Sungrow partner in Georgia and Armenia.
Beyond solar EPC, Step Energy is also developing services in electric-vehicle charging and energy audits.
Its energy-efficiency work has included the screening of around 150 kindergartens in mountainous municipalities under a project implemented with the Polish Solidarity Fund.
The company’s expansion reflects a wider shift in Georgia’s solar market from small rooftop systems towards larger commercial and utility-scale projects.
However, the 75 MW pipeline and other planned projects remain at different development stages. Their construction will depend on financing, permitting, grid connection and final investment decisions.
