ProCredit Bank has become the first Georgian financial institution to verify that its electricity consumption is fully covered by renewable energy through the country’s Guarantee of Origin system.

The verification was completed through a partnership with Adjaristsqali Georgia, the owner and operator of the 187 MW Shuakhevi Hydropower Cascade.

Guarantees of Origin are electronic certificates confirming that a specified volume of electricity was generated from renewable sources. They allow companies to document the origin of the electricity associated with their consumption, even when power is delivered through the national grid.

Georgia introduced its Guarantee of Origin system in 2023. Georgian State Electrosystem is responsible for issuing, registering, transferring and cancelling the certificates under the methodology approved by the Georgian National Energy and Water Supply Regulatory Commission.

According to Adjaristsqali Georgia, the partnership made ProCredit Bank the first financial-sector company in the country to obtain verification covering 100% of its electricity consumption.

The development provides a practical example of how Georgian companies can use the certification system to support renewable-electricity procurement and sustainability reporting.

It may also create a model for other banks, industrial companies and commercial consumers interested in documenting the renewable origin of their electricity.

The certificate does not mean that electricity from Shuakhevi HPP is physically delivered directly to each ProCredit facility. Instead, the Guarantee of Origin system verifies that an equivalent amount of renewable electricity was generated and registered.
